DHL Oceania Conference - Queenstown, NZ
In February 2004, Visual Event Management (VEM) worked together with DHL New Zealand in organising the first Sales Conference for the year, taking place in the beautiful surroundings of Queenstown, New Zealand.
Upon arrival, guests were treated to a surprise 20-minute jet boat ride that offered an exhilarating and unique scenic journey into the heart of Queenstown.
DHL Air and Ocean and Danzas Express teams from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea attended the three-day conference, which was designed around the theme of "The Great Race".
This theme was used throughout the conference to introduce the work objectives and key messages for the year, as well as to foster competition internally between individuals, teams, channels and countries. On the final day the conference was wrapped up with a martial artist and motorbike rider exploding through the set much to the delegates surprise and amusement.
Evening events included a Welcome Reception function that took place inside the Millennium Hotel giving delegates the chance to catch up over canapés and enjoy a selection of New Zealand wines and beer.
The formal dinner on the second night was held at the Skyline Gondola Restaurant that is situated 450 metres above the town offering breathtaking views of The Remarkables and the beautiful Lake Wakatipu.
One of Queenstown's talented Maori groups surprised our delegates, traditionally welcoming them upon arrival. Impressionist and entertainer Brett Rutledge kept our guests entertained during the night and received a standing ovation upon completion of his presentation.
The Themed Dinner on the final evening was a race style dinner, with Auckland band KICK headlining the night.
A Team building afternoon was also incorporated into the busy program to give our delegates a break from the conference room and a chance to breathe in the fresh Queenstown air. The program consisted of a photo challenge around the Queenstown Village as well as an orienteering course and other fun activities in the surrounding gardens.
VEM assisted DHL NZ in every aspect of the event from venue and hotel management, transfers, all technical requirements, set design and construction, entertainment, team building, theming, PowerPoint presentations and conference management.

DHL Kick-off Conference - Perth, February 2004
The DHL Kick-off Conference, held in February 2004 at the Hyatt Regency Perth, staged the first major DHL Asia Pacific event for the year. Over 200 people attended the three day conference which encompassed a contemporary Australiana theme.
After arriving in Perth from various destinations, the event commenced with a Welcome Reception at the Maritime Museum in Fremantle, a short distance away from Perth City. As guests stepped off the bus they were welcomed by the haunting sounds of the didgeridoo, followed by a performance by a local Aboriginal dance troupe, as they made their way up to the upper function room and adjoining veranda which boasted substantial views of the Indian Ocean and Fremantle harbour. Guests were then treated to an array of seafood, including shucked oysters and Western Australian wines, while the welcome speeches took place. Before transfers returned guests to their hotel, tours were made available around the museum for guests to learn of the various achievements and local historical moments, such as Australia's first "Americas Cup" victory.
The following day marked the beginning of the conference sessions. Morning tea on the first day saw native Australian animals and minders introducing many of the guests to animals such as baby kangaroos (joeys) and koalas.
The evening of the opening conference day was the Gala evening event. Guests were unaware of what was in store for them, although hints throughout the day such as an akubra hat left on their beds whilst at the prior evening's event, left them with a taste of what was to come. That evening, luxury coaches transported delegates (dressed with akubras) to Brookleigh Equestrian Estate in the Swan Valley, only a short trip away. Upon arrival, guests were then served pre-dinner drinks on the lawn adjacent to the estate's undercover arena whilst the sounds of a string quartet drifted through the air. Guests were then invited into the arena to take seats for dinner. The entertainment for the evening was a "Man From Snowy River" show, complete with 20 horses (including wild brumbies), traditional Aussie stockmen, bucking broncs, riders, wood-choppers and whip crackers. Travis Sinclair, a top class country and western artist, supported the show throughout, whilst a narrator told the famous Australian tale. The night concluded with aperitifs.
After lunch the following day, guests were taken to the Royal Perth Yacht Club where they embarked upon an afternoon of sailing. The competition was made up from an S80 fleet and Foundation 36s on a handicap system. Rising wind levels made for an action packed afternoon. Prizes were awarded by the Vice Commodore before guests were on their way to the next event of the day, a beach barbeque at Cottesloe Surf Club.
The Nippers from Surf Life Saving Australia demonstrated some surf rescue activities while the guests had pre-dinner drinks on the beach front of Cottosloe Surf Club. Soon afterwards, guests were ushered up to the surf club where they indulged in a traditional Australian BBQ and were then entertained by a surf band for the rest of the evening.
After a final morning of seminars, the conference concluded with a farewell lunch.

Real Estate Investors Network (REIN) Investors Forum
The Lyric Theatre at Star City came alive on Friday 12 December 2003 when over 600 investors from Real Estate Investors Network (R.E.I.N) gathered to share their interests in investment as well as join in a celebration of the festive season.
The evening began with beverages and canapés enjoyed by guests who mingled in the dress circle and stalls foyers with night city views providing a spectacular backdrop.
A VIP Lounge was made available to invited guests half an hour before the other investors arrived at the venue, to enable them to converse with the guests speakers and each other before the formalities commenced.
After the guests had engaged in friendly banter and enjoyed a drink and some hearty canapés, they then moved into the Lyric Theatre for the commencement of the formal part of the evening. This began with an opening address from REIN Chairman Jack McKenzie and was hosted by Anthony Simon (R.E.I.N). The theme for the night was "Educating and Inspiring Confidence in Investment" which was carried across the presentations given by the guest speakers, Bernard Salt (KPMG) and internationally acclaimed author, Bryce Courtenay. Jim Downs, the Founding Director of REIN, also gave a presentation providing an insight into the economic cycle.
After the formal proceedings, the guests moved back out to the foyer areas where they indulged in further canapés and drinks until the early hours of the morning.
Visual Event Management's (VEM) role in the organisation of the event included RSVP line set-up and management, mail-out of the tickets to guests, event management, set design, set construction, production management, food and beverage management, theming in the theatre and the pre/post event areas, organisation of promotional staff to sell investment publications and organisation of a videographer and photographer.
A quote from the REIN January Newsletter summarises the evening: "Arguably one of the largest gatherings of Sydney residential property investors, the forum was a highlight for those involved in organising and was echoed by those in attendance. The information and motivation provided by the speakers and having the opportunity to mingle with other investors was valuable in itself - the fantastic atmosphere provided and the unbelievable view over our favourite city sealing the experience".

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World Premiere
Liquidity Restaurant was the perfect venue to host the after-party for 20th Century Fox's latest film, "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World". Over 800 guests were transported to the Australian premiere via luxury coach and greeted on arrival by a Naval guard of honour.
As guests walked up the red carpet, the majestic tall ships of the Bounty and Svanen emerged before them. Both were moored alongside the wharf in front of the restaurant, and offered a commanding presence and backdrop for the after party.
In keeping with the themes from the film, cannons from the era were on display with an English and French Captain in traditional costume on guard. Large wine barrels fixed with traditional rope and flaming torches were deliberately placed along the shoreline, acting as a barricade and preventing guests from venturing too close to the waters edge.
Inside sepia coloured world maps from the era were made into lanterns and positioned on high tables throughout the space. Silver candelabras were placed on service bars that were draped in fabric and finished with traditional rope.
Aussie star of the film, Russell Crowe, introduced the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) as the featured entertainment for the evening. The ACO performed a 5-minute score from the film's soundtrack, led by ACO Artistic Director Richard Tognetti. The piece was finished in a grand finale of Taiko drumming.
Guests were encouraged to indulge in the sumptuous food that was on offer including freshly shucked oysters from the two oyster bars.
The Daily Telegraph summed up the night by saying "A BIG thumbs-up to those behind the after-party for Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World for putting on one of the best parties this town has seen this year! It's difficult to put a finger on exactly what set it apart - the tall ships docked alongside the red carpet, the naval salutes, (or) the great food and service?"

Asia Television Awards (Singapore)
VEM were appointed by the Asian Television Awards to design and manage all aspects of their annual Awards Ceremony in Singapore in December 2003.
2000 guests attended the awards and the broadcast was sent to 18 countries around the region, giving the show a viewing audience in excess of 100 million.
VEM designed and constructed a set that included five specially designed staircases, three of which were detachable from the main structure that housed the awards screen, and two from the seven metre high rolling set pieces. The set also included a ten metre revolving stage, which in conjunction with the rolling set pieces and detachable stairs, allowed the set to be reconfigured creating dynamic set changes in front of the audiences eyes.
The show included four key hosts and 66 presenters from around the region as well as four performances from some of Asia's best-known artists and bands. VEM scripted the show, including the hosts' and presenters' speeches, and choreographed and directed all stage movements.
The evening began with a mixed media opening based on the theme of "realise your dreams", a concept that was carried through the scripting and set design of the show. The opening incorporated a live and pre-recorded soundscape, video projection, set movements, gymnasts and a live saxophonist, tied together with choreographed moving lights.
VEM managed the construction and technical set up of all elements and stage managed and directed the show on the night. The show went seamlessly and we look forward to working on the project again in 2004.

KIA Car Dealer Launch
Sydney was awash with the roar of the brand new range of KIA vehicles over 3 days, during the KIA Car Dealer Launch in November 2003. Over 350 Car Dealers arrived from around the world to experience and learn about this new impressive range of vehicles.
Visual Event Management (VEM) was very proud to be the organiser of this prestigious event, which literally took over Sydney for the 3 days with branded KIA banners and balloons adorning the city.
VEM organised the Welcome Reception at SCEC, which received the international guests on their first evening, where they viewed branded KIA yachts sailing around the harbour and their first glimpse of one of the new KIA vehicles in the foyer of the venue. Guests enjoyed a sumptuous three course meal, followed by an eclectic mix of music ranging from traditional Hand Bell players, to the Australian Children's choir, with the all singing and dancing grand finale of the Rat Pack's Back band. The evening ended with a stunning laser show and fireworks display over the harbour, concluding with the KIA logo emblazoned in fireworks, much to the guest's awe.
The second day of the Launch was held at Star City, with a conference informing the delegates about the new range of vehicles, which was followed by an impressive car reveal on stage. After a brief lunch the delegates experienced one of the brand new vehicles in more detail, with a test-drive program in the Ku-Ring Gai Chase National Park. The 53 vehicles were certainly tried and tested as the rain poured down, but it certainly seemed to have lifted their experience! VEM were involved in every angle of the test drive from the logistics to the refreshments. The delegates were then driven back via luxury coaches to Sydney to enjoy a relaxed evening meal.
Day three marked the final day; the delegates were able to enjoy Sydney's sights during the day, followed by a Farewell Dinner Cruise around Sydney Harbour. On the open top deck of the boat, the guests enjoyed pre-dinner drinks and canapés during which final speeches took place. The delegates were then ushered down to the 2 lower floors to enjoy the night skyline of Sydney Harbour's views and to be entertained by a roving musician, an outstanding Jazz Band and even Abba was on board, in the form of Abbalanche - an imitation band, complete with lycra and wigs! The guests were offered a buffet style food service on board and danced the night away to the two bands. The evening and the Launch finished with a bang with the most terrific fireworks display, with the Opera House acting as a stunning backdrop - a fantastic finale for the foreign visitors and a suitable wrap to the 3 day Car Dealer Launch.
VEM were involved in every angle of the 3 day Launch, from the entertainment, to venue management, to the shipment and temporary registration of the foreign vehicles and the logistics, and as always are very grateful for all of the help from our suppliers who were involved.

Destination Nokia Launch
VEM were appointed by Nokia to design and manage all aspects of a launch to showcase Nokia's upcoming phones and technologies in October 2003.
Guests consisted of both trade and media from the telecommunications industry. They joined us on Australia's Gold Coast from 13 countries throughout the Asian region.
VEM managed transfers, accommodation, gifts, meals, hosts, lighting, audio visual requirements and R&R activities, as well as the launch events, showcases, workshops and evening events to ensure a seamless integration of all event themes and messages.
After arriving in sunny Queensland, guests were invited to join Nokia at the "High Courts of Fashion" for the launch of Nokia's latest fashion phone. The event was set on the tennis courts at the Royal Pines Resort. With it's sunken floor and sail like roof the tennis courts were the perfect venue to create a sense of grandeur and occasion. False walls pivoted to reveal themed areas. Each area was designed to encapsulate the mood of one of the range of covers available for the phone. An environment was created for each section that allowed guests to interact with the phone via models trained in the product features and styled to suit their area.
The next day guests were invited into a custom designed environment set in the grand ballroom. A video presentation on the upcoming products was shown on three large screens that were worked into the setting, before being invited to experience the product range hands on. The client brief was to create an environment that did not feel like an event but a high-end boutique. We created curved and fluted walls from 20kms worth of 150mm dia PVC water pipe. The pipe was finished in pearled white car duco and shelving was cut into various sections of pipe and internally lit to house the products and accessories.
That night guests got to unwind with a "classic Aussie BBQ" hosted by Big Brother's Mike Goldman. They enjoyed an action packed evening with activities that ranged from percussion performances and ice luge races to a thong flicking competition, darts tournament and, of course, Karaoke.
The following day the guests had their choice of R&R activities, from kayaking with dolphins, to exploring the local waterways on a tall ship or making the most of the shopping opportunities available in the area.

Nokia N-Gage Room
Visual Event Management (VEM) were approached by Nokia Australia to be involved in an exciting project in association with the launch of Nokia's latest gaming device - the N-Gage mobile phone.
The brief from our client was to create a dynamic space within Nokia that embodied the personality of the N-Gage while creating a contrast to the rest of Nokia House. Upon entry into the room, it was important for guests and staff to make an immediate mental leap from Nokia's European design into the unique identity that is N-Gage.
The environment was designed to cater for press related activities with the aim of introducing the N-Gage phone into the target market and build brand awareness before and during its release. To reinforce this message, it was necessary for the room to have an interactive and engaging feel, whilst encouraging guests to get into the idea of 'play' or being part of a game.
One way to achieve this style of environment was by creating customised wallpaper, using the logo as the primary focus in an explosive graphic across the two main walls within the space.
To match the N-Gage's unique look and shape, VEM created a display area made of acrylic tubing that was interesting for both media and Nokia guests. The design gave the media the opportunity to photograph the phone whilst on display so that the shape and design could be captured. With the product wall designed in this way, Nokia were able to leave a number of phones on display (even when the room was full of guests) as this structure enabled VEM to discretely secure the units with fine wire cabling for added security.
Lighting was designed to create an ambience within the N-Gage room that could cater to a variety of uses. The room is currently used for AV presentations, cocktail parties, boardroom meetings, TV interviews as well as gaming competitions and further product development.
VEM created a high-end space that is able to serve many different functions whilst always conveying the N-Gage vibe.

DHL Half Yearly Conference - Vietnam, July 2003
Over 100 guests arrived to Ho Chi Minh City for the DHL Asia Pacific Regional Half Yearly Conference in July 2003, staged at the Sheraton Saigon Hotel.
With DHL having undergone a re-branding process during 2003, this event was strongly focused on logo and branding. The DHL red and yellow was prominent throughout the venue, sessions and events over the three days, even onto the surrounding streets, with the use of banners and lighting.
On arrival at the Sheraton, two huge DHL Branded banners on the street faced either side of the entrance. Off to one side, a red and yellow timber stage coated in red and yellow acrylic, exhibited a vintage Traction Avant Citroen, a traditional Vietnamese Cyclo and a modern DHL courier van, all in the DHL livery of Red and Yellow. The entrance marble wall backing the feature and the hotel driveway were also branded with alternate spotlights of red and yellow lighting the walls.
At the first night welcome evening around the pool, a traditional Vietnamese band played as drinks and substantial canapés were served in a peaceful environment, with the DHL colours enhancing the space with lights, staging and banners. The guests were entertained with a Water Puppet staged in the pool, a traditional Vietnamese form of entertainment. The rest of the evening provided a time for the various guests who had arrived from different destinations across Asia Pacific to mingle and greet old friends.
The second day was full of conference sessions and presentations. In the foyer of the main conference area, a Vietnamese scene was created depicting various cultural aspects of Vietnam, including traditional cyclos (bicycle transport), fabrics, artwork, floral displays, woodwork and various hand woven cane containers and headwear, all items that kept the conference coffee breaks entertaining for the guests.
This day concluded with a dinner at the La Camargue French restaurant. This event was a private dinner setting with a downstairs bar and band for after dinner entertainment.
Day three marked the final day of the main conference. An Ao Dai (traditional Vietnamese dress for men and women) was made to fit each of the guests and delivered to their rooms for them to wear at the evening's function.
As the guests gathered in the front of the hotel for a group photo, over 100 cyclos arrived to transport them to the famous Ho Chi Minh City Opera House. The surrounding streets were momentarily enriched with colour and activity. Once at the Opera House the guests had pre-dinner drinks before being ushered into the theatre where a traditional band and a troupe of traditional Vietnamese Dancers performed various pieces reflecting different regions of Vietnam. As the dancers left the stage, the curtains were then opened to reveal a spectacular dinner setting, subtly lit with the DHL colours.
Entertainment for the evening came in the form of an invited expert. As the speech progressed, and the laughs increased, the guest was revealed as a comedian, to the pleasure of the guests.
The next day was the departure day for the delegates, with the conference, and the previous evening's activities, having been widely reported in the local Vietnamese newspapers.

World Premiere of Ned Kelly (Melbourne)
Melbourne's Regent Theatre was a hub of activity on Saturday 22nd March 2003, when the World Premiere of Ned Kelly was celebrated in style at this beautiful venue.
Over 1500 invited guests strode up the 10m long red carpet lined with the World's media and excited fans. The films Australian stars, Heath Ledger, Naomi Watts and local celebrity Joel Edgerton, joined fellow cast members in helping launch Director Gregor Jordan's, Ned Kelly.
The glitz and glamour of the red carpet arrivals were filmed with a sepia filter so guests inside the theatre could experience red carpet arrivals in true silent film style. The large screen was transformed with a silent movie style border whilst an organist played tunes on a Wurlitzer to accompany those arriving on screen.
Guests enjoyed champagne inside the theatre, whilst watching the arrival of local celebrities such as Delta Goodrem, Magda Szubanski, Nick Gianopoulous, Deborah Mailman and Rove McManus.
Once the speeches and screening concluded, the grand sound of a 30-piece band greeted 1500 guests, as they made their way downstairs into the after party space of the Regent Theatre?s Plaza Ballroom.
The 30-piece band included a 10-piece string section, which filled the ballroom with a richness and unique ambience as they performed music from the film. DJ, Richard Weiss also entertained guests as they enjoyed fresh produce from the Glenrowan Region. The menu included mini Billy cans filled with lamb stew, damper, high country mustard beef in olive baguettes, and lamingtons for dessert.
Crown Lager and Fergusson's Winery were the proud sponsors of the premiere with Ned's Red being launched on the night.
Visual Event Management (VEM) worked closely with the Regent Theatre, Council and Police to produce one of Melbourne's most talked about Premieres. It was a busy time in Melbourne with anti-war protests and rallies however Newspapers and Magazines showed images from the Premiere with the event featuring prominently in their social pages.
VEM also coordinated everything from the red carpet arrivals, media positioning and management, live camera crosses, sponsorship, venue and theatre management, after party organisation, barricading and security.
The client brief was to capture the essence of the Ned Kelly era, but also reflect the modern contemporary style of the film at the premiere. VEM were successful in making the film premiere of Ned Kelly one to remember.

DHL Brand Relaunch
On Friday 9th May 2003, DHL invited 300 key customers to celebrate the launching of the DHL brand worldwide, as well as be the first to be informed of DHL's three-year commitment to sponsoring Surf Lifesaving in Australia. DHL appointed Visual Event Management (VEM) to co-ordinate and launch this message to the Oceania region.
Taking place at the former Express domestic terminal, the tarmac of Sydney Airport was transformed into a purpose-built party space. A 40 metre marquee was positioned on the vacant car park on the space that is to become the new logistics handling terminal for DHL worldwide.
Valet parking attendants greeted guests upon arrival, and as they departed their vehicles, DHL's new corporate colours of red and yellow led them inside the venue. Inside, Chinese lanterns hanging from the roof of the marquee distinguished the pre-dinner drinks area from the more formal dining area. Canapés included Seared Teriyaki Tuna with Wasabi Drizzle, Melted Goats Cheese & Caramelised Onion Tarts and Inside-Out Sushi Rolls. Yellow wax ball candles glowed on each of the red clothed tables and enhanced the new DHL corporate colours.
Once guests were seated, they were served a five star menu that included Layered King Prawns & Avocado Stack and Eye Fillet of Beef Medallion with mixed Potato Gratin, Caramelised Red Onion Jam, and Basil & Madeira Jus.
As the main course concluded, the room erupted into activity as red and yellow lights cruised the space and an upbeat rendition of Hawaii Five-O filled the room, grabbing the guests' attention. A red velvet drape, acting as the back wall for the presentation stage, split to reveal the source of the music - a twelve-piece band onstage wearing dinner suits and bold red & yellow surf lifesaving caps.
As the audience absorbed the quirky image of the band, the two brightly lit DHL vans, parked inside the venue, burst open to reveal Australian Surf Lifesavers. Guests were greeted table-by-table, receiving Surf Life Saving Australia lip-gloss as our lifesavers made their way in traditional formation across the dance floor.
DHL is the proud sponsor of Surf Lifesaving Australia for the next 3 years and to further promote this great cause, VEM organised a large inflatable surf lifesaving cap to be positioned on top of a DHL branded Boeing 737, just outside the venue.
The element of surprise over, front man Bob Valentine proved to be the incentive to get guests up dancing and partying for the rest of the night.
VEM worked closely with DHL and Sydney Airport to synchronize the logistics involved in erecting the inflatable surf lifesaving cap safely and effectively. The complete assembly of the cap on top of the DHL Boeing 737 took less than 45 minutes.

X-Men 2 Film Premiere
Sunday the 27th of April, 2003 saw the State Theatre Sydney become a hive of activity for the Premiere of X Men 2.
From the streets where the public lined up on the blue carpet leading into the theatre, city colours lights threw a steel blue wash, covering the face of the theatre, whilst two search lights beamed into the sky giving a Gotham City ambiance to the night ahead. Some of the daring guests dressed up as X Men Characters and later on in the evening would be in the running to win various prizes for the best look a like X Men character.
As guests entered the theatre, they passed through metal detectors and security guards to walk along the Blue carpet onto which were projected two spinning X Men logos, laser lit from above. The carpet led into a Gothic foyer, lit with a blue haze, creating an elusive, edgy, mysterious environment, further enhanced by the use of smoke machines sifting smoke throughout the foyer, and out onto the street.
Two seven foot letter X's were highlights in a foyer setting which also included a mannequin dressed in Wolverine's Costume and two plasma screens portraying cast interviews and directors notes. Displays on both the ground and first level of the theatre Foyer encased classic Wolverine comics and paraphernalia from the movie and comic series. The items on display were then auctioned off and the proceeds went to a Bone Marrow Foundation.
From here guests were ushered into the screening for the film. The State Theatre's audio system was specifically and carefully augmented for the evening. A wall of six hundred hay bales was used as an acoustic baffle to absorb the bass audio from the film and to stop it reverberating around the room. Comments on the audio system included "the State has never sounded so good".
Over 2000 people attended the premiere.

DHL Family Fun Day
Visual Event Management (VEM) organised and themed the DHL family fun day held at Sydney Airport on Saturday 10th May 2003. This event was held in conjunction with the Customer event the night before, which launched DHL's new re-branding strategy and identity to their key clients.
Over 200 DHL employees and their families arrived to see the transformation of the airport site into a festival of rides and amusements that were catered to all ages.
A giant slide, mechanical surfboard, teacup ride and jumping castle were featured along with a sideshow alley of games and amusements. Face painters also enjoyed transforming tiny faces into yellow and red works of art. A painting competition was held throughout the day with the winning picture now featured in the reception area of a DHL head office.
Whilst children were guided by our emcee, parents were able to relax in the parents' retreat area, sipping on gourmet-flavoured coffee and catching up on weekend reading. The latest magazines and newspapers were available to choose from.
Inside the main marquee, VEM set up five food stations that catered to both children and adults alike. Popcorn, yellow fairy floss, homemade pies, sausage rolls, gourmet sandwiches and a gelato bar were a great success.
To incorporate DHL's 3-year sponsorship of Surf Lifesaving in Australia, Sandy the surf dog entertained children and handed out posters about surf lifesaving in Australia.

Nokia N-Gage Launch
February 5, 2003 saw the once derelict and deserted White Bay Power Station transformed into a hub of activity for the launch of N-Gage, a new mobile gaming unit manufactured by Nokia.
Visual Event Management created an edgy, cool, industrial environment to showcase the N-Gage unit. The events aim was to initiate guests into Nokia's gaming community through various rituals that acted as a rite of passage.
The 200 guests had their senses stimulated upon entering the power station. They were greeted by the emcee Mike Goldman (the voice of the television series "Big Brother"), who guided them through the evening proceedings. Aromas drifted through the power station from the open grill, creating tantalizing smells, as food was tray-served to guests throughout the space. Occasional furnishings were created with empty cable reels while feature tables constructed from crushed car bodies and clear acrylic were set throughout the space.
VJ's (video jockey's) worked constantly through the night, throwing graphically enhanced shots of the guests, images of gaming graphics and other kaleidoscopic imagery onto a corrugated tin screen that hung from steel pillars above. The iron screen also acted as a back drop for the introduction of the N-Gage unit, delivered by the Vice President of Sales, Nokia Mobile Phones South East Asia and Pacific, Tyler McGee.
In order for each guest gain access to the N-Gage product room, they had to complete a set of rituals. The first... Get Shot. A Russian roulette style game that has guests gathered around two circular bars vying for the attention of the barman. Our barman, set upon a pivoting floor that allowed him to spin freely, randomly stopped in front of anyone of the waiting guests. He then poured the winner a shot of lychee martini or butterscotch schnapps.
Following their shot, the guests received a stamp from the barman, which allowed them to redeem their N-Gage watch deeming them fully initiated in the gaming area.
A hidden passage of illusion was created using a series of mirrors and tiny light sources, as it transported guests to the gaming room. Twenty expert gamers greeted the guests and encouraged them to learn and compete against each other with the N Gage units for the chance to win great Nokia prizes. Coloured acrylic and graphics of games such as "Tomb Raider" and "Sonic" were suspended in mid air heavily illuminated with lighting, creating a beautifully designed space for the competition.
Following the evening's success, VEM managed Nokia's N-Gage workshop the following day for 150 people in the Yu Nightclub and Soho Bar.

Virgin Blue Kids' Christmas Party 2002
Visual Event Management (VEM) was delighted once again to organise and theme the Virgin Blue Kids' Christmas Party held at Alexander Clark Park in Brisbane on the 15th of December.
400 parents and children arrived to have a relaxing picnic in the park and were greeted by face painters, a balloon bender, a jumping castle and a range of sporting activities. A master of ceremonies and some of Santa's friendly elves entertained and encouraged guests to participate in the organised potato sack, three legged races and balloon toss.
Our young guests were invited to eat a sumptuous gourmet Barbecue lunch, which was a feast of hotdogs, fish nuggets and chips, salads, roast meats off the bone and corn on the cob.
The big finale of the day was the arrival of a motorcycle riding Santa, as he thundered through the park to the tune of Santa Claus is Coming to Town and 200 children screaming and following him in excitement. After a safe journey through the trees, Santa was then assisted by his four elves in handing out Christmas presents to all of the children.

Bon Jovi 'Busk' Event
When American band, Bon Jovi decided to rock Sydney Harbour with a free concert event, Universal Music knew that Visual Event Management (VEM) were the company to turn to. In true acoustic style, Bon Jovi played a 45-minute set to over 10,000 adoring fans and passers by on Friday 13th December at Cockle Bay.
Turning Cockle Bay into a temporary rock stadium for the 45-minute event, VEM sourced a barge suited to the band with a massive 46 square metre super screen as a backdrop against the Sydney Skyline. Media, VIP and general public viewing pits were constructed from over 400 metres of barrier to contain the crowds safely.
Securing XBOX as a major sponsor for the event, VEM coordinated screen entertainment from midday until Bon Jovi took to the stage at 4pm. This included XBOX play-offs for punters to win one of five XBOX units personally signed by the band.
Bon Jovi arrived into Cockle Bay on a luxury cruiser with lucky 2Day FM competition winners and were then transferred to the stage via three speedboats. With a loud roar from the audience the band played some of their most famous hits as well as their recent releases.
VEM ensured that every safety element was looked after including the presence of St. Johns Ambulance and surf lifesavers for the duration of the event. Even with three enthusiastic fans taking to the water in an attempt to swim to the barge, the event ran smoothly with the band and fans all thrilled they had been part of a truly unique performance.

Blue Crush Film Premiere
Sydney - 2 December, 2002. VEM's brief for the after party of the premiere of the surf film "Blue Crush" was to create an event that felt like Saturday night used to feel - a little bit blue light disco, a little bit kitsch, and a little bit cheeky.
The Maroubra Pavilion was the perfect location to host this event (although never before used for an event of this size or nature), with its fabulous view of the beach and an expansive space to erect the large clear-span marquee which created the ideal disco atmosphere.
VEM worked closely with the venue and local authorities to organise a safe and enjoyable event, which entailed lengthy discussions with Councillors, Lifesaving Australia and Security personnel. One of the major issues in using the venue for such an event was the noise concerns for neighbouring properties. VEM undertook thorough investigative research to ensure a limited amount of noise pollution to the surrounding areas.
At the conclusion of the film at Hoyts Cinema's, Fox Studios guests were escorted onto waiting buses, which then travelled to Maroubra Beach.Bold outdoor lighting was brought in to illuminate the exterior of the building - which gleamed a Blue Crush blue. Guests entered the venue through a dome like entrance featuring a watery ceiling.
The large marquee, set at the front of the venue overlooking the beach, was simply furnished with cocktail tables, a dance floor and DJ booth. A games area, complete with surf machine and traditional pinball and foosball created an interactive space to remind guests of their teenage years.
The outside area was designed as a more relaxed environment and featured low-level seating, created with colourful canvas beach cushions and long low tables and enclosed with wooden picket fencing, complete with flame torches that provided a balmy tropical atmosphere.
Coloured lighting was also used to highlight the beach and the crashing waves.
Guests were encouraged to indulge in party treats, such as a burning spit roast, traditional barbecue cuisine, petite ice creams and tropical fruit skewers.
Party DJ, Stephen Ferris played a mixture of 80's and 90's tunes that had everyone on the dance floor or boogying in their seats.
Overall, the party was a resounding success, with VEM once again leading the way in discovering a fantastically unique new Sydney event venue.

Lilo & Stitch Film Premiere
VEM were appointed to create and manage a unique red carpet entrance and after party for the new Disney feature film 'Lilo & Stitch'.
The brief from the client was to design an event that had a distinctly Hawaiian feel, whilst appealing both to adults and children alike.
To create a hint of what the film had in store for guests, VEM dressed the entrance to Hoyts Cinema at Fox Studios with a temporary beach including real sand, palm trees, astro turf and a giant inflatable of Stitch himself. A hula troupe, dressed in traditional Hawaiian costumes, greeted guests with their soothing voices and emotive dances. The lyrical tones of the ukele provided a fitting background sound.
As guests entered the cinema, invitations were exchanged for traditional floral leis, which served as tickets into the cinema, as well as a welcoming gift and memento.
Upon leaving the cinema, guests were greeted once again by the hula girls who enticed them into "Lilo's Luau" - a tree-lined terrace just a short stroll from the cinema complex. VEM transformed this area with Hawaiian style theming, food and entertainment.
A beach band, face painter, balloon sculptor and surfing machine provided fun and entertainment for the gathering crowds. The traditional Hawaiian performers welcomed guests into the luau with their interactive and visually spectacular displays of coconut husking, palm weaving and fire throwing.
Guided by an emcee, the games and activities during the day included a limbo competition, hoola hoop competition and hula dancing lessons. In addition to facilitating the day, the emcee also touched on significant aspects and themes from the film, in particular the concept of "ohana" - to encourage interaction and family unity.
After a magical afternoon of games, fun, lots of yummy food and family activities, the hula troupe bid farewell to the guests with a final performance from the stage.
As a parting gift, guests were given the opportunity to have their photo taken with Lilo & Stitch - in front of a custom-made backdrop.

Twentieth Century Fox Films Company Conference
VEM were appointed to manage all aspects of the annual Twentieth Century Fox Films Conference including transfers, accommodation, gifts, meals, team building, speakers, audio & visual requirements, brainstorming sessions, resort activities and a gala evening with a twist, ending the conference in style!
The client brief was to reward the staff, whilst allowing them to get to know and learn from each other in a relaxing environment.
VEM recommended Couran Cove Island Resort for it's unique location and broad facilities.
Throughout the four days, guests were treated to: a dynamic keynote address and brainstorming session by speaker, Jason Clarke; a varied different team building program including warm-up 'initiatives', an exhilarating ropes course, and an interactive "island challenge"; and a murder mystery gala dinner - "Bond" style.
Guests also indulged in beauty treatments, water sports and long leisurely evenings at the resorts' main bar - which VEM arranged to keep open especially for those late night party-goers!
At the end of the conference, guests were ferried back to the mainland, reluctant to depart after such a relaxing, rewarding and rejuvenating four days.

New Idea Centenary Celebrations
To mark the 100th birthday of New Idea Magazine, a celebratory cocktail party was held in both Melbourne and Sydney in August 2002.
Visual Event Management were appointed to produce these two events, which included a Supper Club style Cocktail Party at the Windsor Hotel in Melbourne, and a fun-filled night of mechanical music at the fabulous Fairground Follies in Sydney.
In Melbourne, the feature entertainment for the evening was James Morrison and his sextet, including the talented vocalist, Emma Pask. Oversized Chesterfields and soft lighting accentuated the mood of the Grand Ballroom of the Windsor, and the walls of the room were appropriately adorned with massive reproductions of iconic New Idea magazine covers, including the first ever issue. These banners were so popular amongst guests that they were offering bids to take them home!
The Antique Mechanical Music Museum, Fairground Follies was a uniquely different and ideal venue for the Sydney celebration. The venue is filled with an abundance of extraordinary mechanical musical devices from the early 20th century, salvaged from fairgrounds around the world. In addition to the wonderful music demonstrated by many of the antique pieces, rides on the carousel, and music by popular DJ, Richard Weiss, guests were treated to an array of sumptuous culinary delights. A gallery-like space, created within the venue played host to a chronology of New Idea Magazine covers - providing guests with a fascinating insight into the history of the magazine and the Australian culture itself.
Both events were a resounding success, with VEM responsible for all aspects including concept design, staging, lighting, audio and visual requirements, catering and management.

National Oompa Loompa Day - Wonka Chocolates
On Sunday 30 June, VEM produced the launch event for the new WONKA chocolate bar 'Caramelicious Fudge Sludge'.
The day commenced with befuddled Oompa Loompas, roaming around the foreshores of Cockle Bay, eagerly searching for their beloved Willy Wonka.
At the same time, from his home under the Sydney Opera House, Willy Wonka caught word that his Oompa Loompa's were lost. So, on a horse drawn carriage resembling a chocolate box, he made his way to Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour, via the streets of the Sydney CBD.
On the lawns of Tumbalong Park, the gathering crowds were entertained by a grown-up Charlie Bucket - who acted as emcee throughout the day, facilitating various fun activities such as a burping competition, Nerds throwing competition, a larger than life Twister and story telling. A balloon sculptor and face painter were also on hand to entertain the children.
On the centre stage, VEM created a Willy Wonka style Chocolate Factory, complete with metre high mushrooms, candy cane sticks, barber poles and a wonka-invention that created hundreds of bubbles that floated through the air.
As Willy Wonka approached Tumbalong Park, the Oompa Loompas joined him on the centre stage, performing a dance to the Oompa Loompa tune "Oompa Loompa, Oompa di do, we've got a fun-filled puzzle for you"...
At the end of the song, Willy Wonka announced the launch of WONKA Chocolates' golden ticket competition. Willy and the Oompa Loompa's then joined in the fun and games being facilitated by Charlie Bucket.
After a magical afternoon of activities, lots of chocolate and WONKA goodies, Willy Wonka and the Oompa Loompas said farewell to their guests, and departed via the horse drawn carriage.

NW Magazine Academy Awards Lunch
On Monday 25th March 2002, excitement filled the air as the cream of Australia's celebrities gathered at Fox Studios' Byron Kennedy Hall. They were there for the annual official telecast of the Academy Awards, presented this year by NW magazine.
Visual Event Management created a decadent environment in which the high profile guests mingled. Large video screens were worked into the setting, ensuring that no matter where attendees were in the space, they were guaranteed an uninterrupted view of the live telecast from L.A.
During the red carpet arrivals, the glamorous guests were greeted by two muscular "living" Oscars. Then, to begin the day, our revellers were served champagne and breakfast canapés as they emerged into the setting of a busy hexagonal bar, complete with a life-sized Oscar centrepiece.
As the day progressed, guests' taste buds were enticed by the flavours of gourmet pastries and other delicacies as the breakfast canapés evolved into more substantial treats. By later in the afternoon, the service transformed again to feature desserts, ice-creams and cocktails at the bar.
In true Academy Awards style, two "Beauty Bars" lit up the back wall, inviting guests to indulge in makeovers and manicures by an army of Napoleon artists.
Guests were encouraged to add a touch of fun to their outfits with feather boas and strings of pearls that flowed out of golden baskets and boxes, set throughout the hall.
The exclusive crowd gathered around tables dressed in burgundy and gold to take in the live telecast which included the prestigious red carpet arrivals, interviews and the full Academy Awards ceremony.
Other guests chose to watch the telecast whilst relaxing on plush velvet chaise lounges, delicately positioned on raised red platforms. The lounge settings were surrounded by tall Parisian fans clad with tiny flickering lights, while enormous NW magazine covers completed the backdrop.
Guests received a memento of the day as their image, post makeover, was superimposed onto an exclusive cover of NW magazine. By the day's end, they left with their hearts and heads filled with excitement, and memories of a true Academy Awards experience.

Virgin Megastore Launch
In true Branson style, mid April saw the relaunch of Virgin Megastore into the Australian Market with a street parade at the Jam Factory on Chapel Street in Melbourne.
The brief was to open the store in a blaze of glory with the theme "If music is your religion this is your chapel". Media attention was the primary focus of the night while still creating a spectacular show for the VIP's and thousands of people who attended the street parade.
After negotiations with Stonnington City Council VEM successfully secured the closure of Chapel Street in peak hour traffic which also included the re-diversion of trams to ensure adequate space for the staging of the event. The event barricades and staging was set up during the day and a press conference was held in store during the afternoon.
The evening started with an official procession culminating in the arrival of Sir Richard Branson on the back of a bright red hot-rod. The procession contained groups from the local Melbourne community such as the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Choir and the Harley Davidson Riders Association with nuns as pillion passengers armed with large Virgin Megastore flags.
Sir Richard Branson alighted the hotrod onto the stage officially opening the store with a special appearance from Sir Elton John. With champagne flowing fireworks exploded from the roof of the Jam Factory to the sound of Joan Jets "I Love Rock and Roll" as a wash of Virgin red lighting drenched the building.
Listed as 'the hottest music event of the year' the guest list saw celebrities such as Sir Elton John, Olivia and Chloe Newton-John, Jimmy Barnes, Molly Meldrum, Deni Hines, Madison Avenue, Jim Owen and many more. VIP guests were wined and dined while they explored the new store and were treated to a lingerie fashion parade performed by some rather naughty nuns.
Immediately following the fireworks the street stage exploded into action as Jebidiah played to the bustling crowd followed by a typically sensational performance from Machine Gun Fellatio.
VIP's were escorted to ZOS (Zone of Separation) nightclub for the official after party where they played until the early hours of the morning. Guests were entertained by Melbourne band Waikiki and DJ's from Ministry of Sound. Virgin Mobile's Salvation station was a huge hit with DJ Michal playing as the salvation angels kept the crowd dancing.
The Virgin Megastore Opening was an overwhelming success and exceeded media expectations both in Australia and internationally.

Guests were treated to smoothies and a Berroca bar in the morning breaks to relieve those sore heads. The Japanese Benihana restaurant at the Marriott also provided an entertaining lunch as the chefs cooked up and threw various Japanese delicacies - tepanyaki style.
The 'Morning Glory Awards Gala Dinner' was the grand finale and everyone was very excited. As a team building exercise the staff were given $1000 each and put together a music video, which were screened on the night.
The dinner was hosted in an Oscar orientated gala awards style with gold lame and black drapes around the room. The tables were set in black, with glass bowls and floating candles, the chair covers were also black with gold sashes.
A chill out area was located at the back of the ballroom with black and gold-laced banquettes and 50 moon hoppers, which proved very popular. DJ Grant Kearney, who is internationally acclaimed and a Universal Music employee played a mixture of tunes that had everyone on the dance floor.

For this, Fox had three of the film's main characters brought to life with the making of costumes. As such, it was VEM's role to take Scrat the squirrel, Sid the sloth and Manny the woolly mammoth to meet the kids and families who adored them.
The characters toured through Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane to various Westfield shopping centres, where children got to pat Manny's soft woolly fur, hug Scrat and joke around with Sid. As a token of appreciation, the children were handed Ice Age posters and activity sheets.

This prestigious red carpet event was held at the State Theatre in Market Street, Sydney, where Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz and Director Cameron Crowe were greeted by thousands of people. At the conclusion of the premiere guests were escorted to the after party, in the Northern Foyer of the Opera House.

"You guys have the hard job of pulling it all together and making it look easy - but without your incredible attention to detail and your willingness to go the extra distance - the event would not have been as smooth and polished as it was."

VEM worked closely with the RTA, Police and Sydney City Council to organise a safe road event, which took a complex mix of timing and execution during Christmas late night shopping in the centre of the city.

On arrival, the 1050 Virgin Blue staff, crew and guests were handed jelly jet plane champagne cocktails. The elegant outdoor setting hosted an ice sculptor who was working on the finishing touches of a three dimensional airplane. Trees were washed in red light as the soft sounds of modern jazz and blues drifted through the area.

Placed next to the dance floor, a large 'Beer Hall' defined by red ceiling lighting encouraged guests to mingle with others and relax. Two eleven-metre bars allowed easy service for the hundreds of partygoers.
Red perspex walls framed the beer hall and separated the chill out lounge which VEM created into a lounge setting with red and black sofas, red and white coffee tables, flokarti rugs, bright red ottomans, and hanging rice paper lanterns with red globes. In the corner of the chill out lounge a large ice carved Virgin 'V' sat behind staff giving out Bacardi Breezers and cocktails.
The highlight of the night was the arrival of 'ABBA', Brett Godfrey the CEO of Virgin Blue and his management team frocked up and danced away to their version of Waterloo.

VEM brings Hollywood to Sydney!
Visual Event Management (VEM) brought White Bay Power Station alive as they staged the party for the Australian Premiere of "The Fast and The Furious".
In a VEM tradition of creating unique and diverse event experiences, they went all out. After spending months researching the ideal location, finding and negotiating with the relevant government bodies VEM eventually decided that the White Bay Power Station at Balmain was the perfect backdrop for this event.
As such they set to work, transforming the once derelict Power Station into an exciting and memorable venue for the star of the film, Paul Walker and over 650 guests.
It was the first time that White Bay Power Station had been used for a live event. VEM lit the outer walls and smoke stacks using coloured washes and giant images from the film. Inside they installed over 200 lighting fixtures to bring out the intricate detailing in the historic space.
The venue was then defined further into three areas. VEM created a lounge setting with 12 Ferrari red sofas and hanging paper lanterns with red globes. A bar area constructed from old Ducati motorbike crates and Ferrari red 40 gallon drums with The Fast and The Furious logo roughly spray painted onto the top and a dancefloor with a view that extended up into the five storey high ceiling through a cut out section in the floor above. The guests looked up to a mezzanine where the DJ Stephen Ferris was dramatically set.
Revellers were served a hearty meal of spit roasts and corn on the cob. To carry the Fast and Furious flavour through the evening, nine specialty show cars were positioned around the venue inside and out. With hoods popped and engines rumbling they truly added the finishing touches to the event, transporting guests into a setting that could have been anywhere from Sydney to New York where the film was shot.
VEM's diverse and dynamic team, are the driving force behind some of Australia?s largest movie premieres and events, from MI:2 last year which transformed the way Sydney executes red carpet premieres to the red carpet at Moulin Rouge earlier this year and many others in between.
